North America -
The 2008 Nissan 350Z continues to offer sports car lovers high performance excitement and a dynamic driving experience in a range of high value Coupe and Roadster models - including the dramatic NISMO 350Z (Coupe only) that was added to the lineup as part of a major Z® revision for the 2007 model year. Changes for the 2007 model year also included an all-new next-generation 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 rated at 306 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. Enhancements for 2008 include one new premium exterior paint color, Nogaro Red. The 2008 350Z is available in Coupe and Roadster body styles and in an array of models - five for the Coupe (including the NISMO 350Z) and three for the Roadster.
The NISMO 350Z, introduced in summer 2007, features an aerodynamics package with an aggressive front fascia with chin spoiler, side skirts, an extended rear fascia with underbody diffuser and a rear wing. This package produces additional aerodynamic downforce for enhanced cornering and handling performance. Additional NISMO 350Z performance features include a specially tuned independent multi-link suspension, Brembo brakes with four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers and NISMO-branded gunmetal gray RAYS super lightweight forged-alloy wheels and NISMO-branded tuned exhaust. The NISMO 350Z is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 350Z Coupe and 350Z Roadster share a proud Z® performance heritage, including a state-of-the-art platform, engine, suspension and braking systems. The heart and soul of the Nissan Z®, since the original 1970 model, is its engine. Every 350Z offers a VQ35HR 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 306 horsepower @ 6,800 RPM and 268 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 RPM, with more than 90% of torque available between 2,000 and 7,000 RPM.
Both a 6-speed close-ratio manual and a 5-speed automatic transmission are available on the 350Z. The manual transmission features close-ratio gearing from 1st to 5th speed ranges for high-performance driving and an overdrive 6th speed for long-legged highway fuel economy and reduced engine noise. The advanced automatic transmission design includes Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), which provides smooth downshifting by automatically blipping the throttle.
The Z®'s FM (Front Mid-Ship) platform positions the engine behind the front axle, providing an optimized front-to-rear weight balance of 53/47. The FM platform, derived from racing technology, also places a strong emphasis on aerodynamics, especially on the control of airflow under the body.
The Z®'s suspension is a 4-wheel independent multilink design with extensive use of lightweight aluminum components and standard front and rear stabilizer bars. The standard rack-and-pinion steering system features a vehicle speed-sensitive power assist, which provides comfortable steering effort at both low and high speeds. The system's two orifice sets (compared with one set for traditional power steering systems) work together to generate the appropriate level of steering effort for nearly every driving condition. The orifice sets are controlled by a solenoid valve and electrical control units.
The 2008 350Z offers a power-assisted 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Brembo brakes, featuring four-piston front caliper pistons and two-piston rear calipers, larger brake pads and larger rotors, are standard on the Coupe and Roadster Grand Touring models for even more superb stopping power. Traction Control System (TCS) and available Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) work in conjunction with the Z's braking system. The wheels are mounted with 245/40WR18 (front), 265/35WR19 (rear) Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. All 2008 Z®s also feature a standard Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).
2008 350Z Coupe
The 350Z Coupe takes its cues from the original 1970 Datsun 240Z - a front engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, two-seat interior, a powerful 6-cylinder engine and, like the original, features a true hatchback body. Design cues passed on from the first-generation Z® include the long nose and short deck styling, triangular cabin form and the lines extending from the arch-shaped roof to the hatchback opening.
The front end's sleek, aggressive design includes High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon (high and low beam xenon) headlights. The Z®'s strong, spine-like beltline is anchored with large, distinctive LED taillights for better visibility and quicker lighting times than conventional lights. Other standard Z® body elements include an aluminum hood, distinctive vertical door handles and heated outside mirrors. The coupe models' coefficient of drag is 0.30 for the Base, Enthusiast and Touring models and 0.29 for the Grand Touring model - which includes front and rear spoilers.
Inside, the Z® Coupe interior features steering wheel audio controls (except base model), mp3-CD capability for the available Bose® audio system and standard XM® Satellite Radio with body-color antenna on Coupe models. Also available for 2008 is a Nissan Navigation System, which offers intelligent search capabilities and split screen capability (allows viewing of map and intersection simultaneously).
The Z®'s classic 3-bay gauge pod is similar to original 240Z design, while the specially shaped driver's seat (different from passenger design) holds the body firmly in place during enthusiastic driving.
The driver's seat of the Z® Roadster is tailored for performance. The base cushion is firm and long for additional support, while bolster cutouts under the thighs optimize pedal operation. The upper side bolster is sculpted in the middle for easy shifting and steering, while the lower side bolster is designed wider and deeper to keep the driver squarely behind the wheel.
2008 350Z Base and Enthusiast Coupe models feature an 8-way manual driver's seat/4-way manual passenger's seat and black woven "carbon" seat cloth. Touring and Grand Touring Coupes come standard with 8-way power driver/4-way power passenger leather-appointed seats in a choice of three colors (Frost, Charcoal and Burnt Orange).
The long list of standard equipment includes automatic temperature control, a lockable rear luggage box behind the passenger seat, center console with solid aluminum look, power windows with auto one-touch up and down, power door locks, aluminum pedals (except Base model) and HomeLink® Universal Transceiver (except Base model). 2008 NISMO 350Z
The NISMO 350Z model offers a striking visual differentiation from regular Z® Coupes with a special aerodynamics package designed to resemble the Super GT championship winning Z®. Featuring an aggressive front fascia with chin spoiler, side skirts, an extended rear fascia with underbody diffuser and a rear wing, the NISMO 350Z produces additional aerodynamic downforce to provide enhanced cornering and handling performance.
Special consideration is given during assembly of the NISMO 350Z - structural rigidity is enhanced by additional body welds to the already rigid 350Z body and additional supports have been added front and rear. The NISMO 350Z also utilizes special body dampers mounted in the front radiator core support and in the rear cargo area, which assist in controlling body vibrations. Additional performance features include a special NISMO-tuned independent multi-link suspension, Brembo brakes with four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers (with 12.8-inch front and 12.7-inch rear rotors) and special NISMO-branded gunmetal gray RAYS super lightweight forged-alloy wheels measuring 18x9-inches front and 19x10-inches rear, with 245/40WR18 front and 265/35WR19 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires.
A special NISMO-branded tuned exhaust adds an even more authoritative tone to the Z®'s 306-horsepower V6 engine. Four exterior colors are available, including Redline Red, Magnetic Black, Silver Alloy and Pikes Peak White. Inside, NISMO 350Z features unique black cloth seats with red inserts, red stitching throughout the interior and special NISMO white-faced tachometer. All NISMO 350Zs receive a serialized NISMO-etched aluminum plaque mounted on the center console, designating its limited edition status.
2008 350Z Roadster
The 350Z Roadster, first introduced as a 2004 model, continues to be the premier open-air sports car for top-down driving enthusiasts. For 2008, 350Z Roadster is offered in three models: Enthusiast, Touring and Grand Touring.
The Z® Roadster features a power-operated soft top with heated glass rear window, which transforms from top-up to top-down in about 20 seconds. The top stows compactly under a lightweight, powered tonneau cover, completely hiding the top when down. The three-lock, single latch system provides a secure seal, while also making the opening and closing process easier.
Numerous structural reinforcements were incorporated to strengthen the Z® Roadster unibody (versus the 350Z Coupe), including a center floor V-shaped cross bar connecting the side sills and a front A-shaped cross bar reinforcing the front end. Additional reinforcement was added at the door openings and a triple-member was added to the seating area connecting the sides to the floor structure to provide enhanced rigidity.
A tempered glass wind deflector, located between the seats, directs wind out and over the cabin when the top is down, reducing interior noise. Seatbelt fasteners are standard to help keep seatbelts from flapping in the wind. As a result, the Z® Roadster is among the leading competitors for low top-down interior noise.
Like the Z® Coupe, the Z® Roadster's instrument panel features three gauge pods consisting of the drive computer, oil pressure gauge and voltmeter, as well as modern touches such as the optional navigation system with a 7.0-inch display.
A special offering on Z® Roadster are Burnt Orange ventilated leather-trimmed net seats (Touring and Grand Touring only). The 6-way power net-style seats are made with a woven seat cloth center insert and feature an opening in the seatback so that the driver can feel a wind flow during top-down driving and are heated for even more comfort.
The Z® Roadster makes the most of available storage space, with a standard lockable luggage box capable of storing a briefcase and sufficient trunk space, even with the top retracted. The trunk has up to 4.1 cubic feet of useable room for storage.
350Z Safety Features
The 2008 Nissan Z® utilizes Nissan's "Zone Body" construction, providing front and rear "crushable" zones and a secure center occupant zone. The Z®'s body structure has been designed to create a high degree of structural and torsional rigidity. Key features include a double-panel floor, a double front bulkhead and large-section doorsills.

Next-Generation Nissan Altima Coupe Brings Style, Emotion and Sophistication to Mid-Size Coupe Market
- New Altima Coupe Debuts at Los Angeles Auto Show; Offers Upscale Styling, Sporty Performance, Driver-Oriented Interior and High Quality -
North America -
The Nissan Altima is a car on the move. With its next generation design for the 2007 model year, Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States is poised for even greater success as it establishes segment leadership in style, design, performance and innovation. The next-generation Altima is also expanding its model offerings with a new Altima Hybrid, set to go on sale in select markets in January 2007, and a dramatically styled new Altima Coupe, which will go on sale as a 2008 model in summer 2007.
The Altima Coupe, which made its debut in the shadows of Hollywood at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, fills a desire among target customers for a more personal expression of style, individuality and fashionable appearance. The Altima Coupe's unique exterior design is intended to stand out in a crowd of sedan-based two-door models with magnetic, perfectly proportioned styling with a shorter wheelbase, shorter overall length and lower height than the Altima Sedan.
The smaller size and lighter overall weight also contribute to the Coupe's sportier driving feel - other desired attributes of the typically younger, more performance-oriented coupe buyers.
"Rather than just eliminating two doors from the Altima Sedan, we gave the Altima Coupe its own style, its own dimensions and its own interpretation of Nissan's exhilarating driving pleasure," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division.
Though the new Altima Coupe shares much with the latest edition of the Altima Sedan, which went on sale in early November 2006, the Coupe's smaller dimensions, driver-oriented cockpit and unique styling give it an extensive amount of separation from the Altima Sedan.
Dimensionally, the Altima Coupe rides on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, a full 4.0 inches shorter than the Sedan. Overall length is 182.5 inches - 7.1 inches less than the Sedan. The Coupe also has a lower profile - at 55.3 inches it is 2.5 inches shorter than the Sedan. In terms of major body panels, the two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Altima Coupe.
Under the new Altima Coupe's sophisticated exterior design, this latest addition to the Altima family shares the platform, powertrain and user-friendly features and innovations of the new fourth-generation Altima.
"A strong sedan starting point, such as the new Altima, also gives you a tremendous advantage - if you get the basics right, you can focus your efforts on the unique desires of coupe buyers, including wanting a purely personal space," said Bosley.
The Altima Coupe, as part of the fourth-generation Altima design, utilizes Nissan's all-new, highly acclaimed "D" platform with increased body rigidity and a redesigned suspension. This new platform was developed with the objective of making Altima one of the best performing large front-wheel drive vehicles available globally.
New suspension geometry, shock absorbers with rebound springs, engine placement that is lower in the subframe and equal-length half-shafts that have equal angles and are more parallel to the ground all help to virtually eliminate torque steer.
The rear multi-link independent suspension design separates the rear shocks and springs for reduced friction and the shocks are in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing better damping and less harshness. Front and rear stabilizer bars are standard. The Altima suspension has been specially tuned for use with the Altima Coupe.
The new Altima Coupe is offered with a choice of two engines and two transmissions. The 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 is the "next generation" version of the 12-time Ward's "10 Best Engines" award-winning VQ-series V6. For use in the Altima Coupe, it is rated at 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and offers strong acceleration and refined sound quality. The V6 features reduced friction, improved cylinder head cooling and new twin knock sensors.
Also available with the new Altima Coupe is a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve QR25 inline 4-cylinder, producing 175 horsepower (170 hp CAL) and 180 lb-ft of torque (175 lb-ft CAL). This engine has been refined from the previous version, with a larger, equal-length intake manifold, increased compression ratio and reduced friction characteristics. It features a silent chain drive and a balancer system (with balancer changed to a center-mounted location for better NVH) that effectively negates vibrations without taking up much space - combining ideal packaging and smoothness.
Both engines feature continuously variable valve timing, modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons and electronically controlled throttles.
Both the 3.5-liter V6 and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder models are available with Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) or 6-speed manual transmissions.
The V6 CVT features a "Sport" mode controller with a high-speed central processing unit and Adaptive Shift Controller with adaptive logic for faster shifting in both normal and manual modes. The adaptive logic feature delivers the best shift pattern based on the driving environment and driver's perceived intentions.
"The driving performance of the Altima Coupe is biased toward sporty feel, especially when equipped with our award-winning V6," said Bosley. "Handling is also a strong point of the new Coupe, as is the responsiveness feeling provided by the Xtronic CVT transmission."
Also contributing to the Altima Coupe's sporty performance feel are a standard twin-orifice vehicle-speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering system and 4-wheel disc brakes with standard 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).
Altima Coupe models with the 4-cylinder engine are equipped with 16-inch wheels and tires, while V6-equipped Altima Coupes come with unique-design 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and 215/55R17 tires.
The Altima Coupe's performance feeling is also enhanced by a driver-centered interior. Though sharing much of the design and features with the new Altima Sedan, the Coupe includes unique sport-style front seats with more side support, in-board release lever and front kangaroo pouches. All Altima Coupes also utilize a parking brake hand lever (versus foot release for Altima Sedans with CVT). The Coupe also includes a 60/40 split and flat
fold-down rear seat.
Like the Altima Sedan, the Altima Coupe's instrument panel features a Fine Vision gauge display for enhanced readability and the L-shaped flow of the instrument panel to the center console adds to the driver-oriented cockpit feel.
The center console includes a double front cup holder, among the many convenient cup and bottle areas and storage compartments.
The list of impressive passenger amenities includes standard Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and available Bose ®-developed audio system with nine speakers, Bluetooth ® Hands-Free Phone System, satellite radio and dual-zone automatic temperature control.
The new Altima Coupe also comes equipped with a number of standard safety features, including Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), which includes dual-stage front supplemental air bags. Also standard are front seat side-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection.
Other standard equipment includes front seat Active Head Restraints, the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat anchors and tether system and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).
The 2008 Altima Coupe will be available in four well-equipped models: 2.5 S 6MT, 2.5 S CVT, 3.5 SE 6MT, 3.5 SE CVT.
Available technology features include a RearView Monitor, which utilizes a small camera to help show the view behind the vehicle when in reverse gear, and Nissan Navigation System with a 6.5-inch color monitor.
"Along with the Altima Coupe's extensive list of available features and amenities, it offers one more thing to discerning coupe buyers - the reassurance of Nissan durability, quality and reliability," said Bosley.
The new Altima Coupe will be assembled at the Nissan North America Manufacturing Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee plants.
Altima Coupe becomes the seventh Nissan Altima model, joining the 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 S with SL Package, 3.5 SE, 3.5 SL and Altima Hybrid (Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
"The Altima name and outstanding reputation adds great credibility to the new Altima Coupe - and the Coupe makes the Altima brand stronger by appealing to a new segment of buyers," said Bosley. "And like the Altima Sedan, the new Coupe will be a tremendous value when it goes on sale next summer. If you're looking for style, performance and affordability, the new Altima Coupe delivers." # # #
2008 Altima Hybrid Offers Market
Unique Synergy of Efficiency and Performance

North America -
The Nissan Altima Hybrid, which joined the Nissan lineup last year, continues to offer the efficiency and fuel economy of a hybrid drivetrain with the performance and excitement that marks the non-HEV fourth generation Altima. For 2008, enhancements to the Altima Hybrid include the addition of standard splash guards, Diversity Antenna and available factory-activated XM® Satellite Radio (required monthly subscription sold separately).
The Altima Hybrid is part of Nissan's ongoing efforts in the area of environmental protection and vehicle efficiency. The company's aim is to provide the right technology to the right market at the right time and right value to the customer. In addition to Altima Hybrid, Nissan offers a wide application of its advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) and Flexible Fuel Technology (FFV) in the 2008 Titan pickup and Armada SUV.
Altima Hybrid has been certified to meet California emissions requirements and is sold in states that have adopted California emissions regulations: California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. These eight states are among the strongest markets for hybrid vehicles.
"Altima Hybrid's drive system creates a synergy between its electric motor and its gasoline engine, offering efficiency and excitement in the same attractive package," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.
The Altima Hybrid powertrain mates a refined version of Nissan's QR25 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and standard electronically controlled CVT with an advanced electric drive motor/generator that increases fuel economy while maintaining low tailpipe emissions. Altima Hybrid is rated as an Advanced Technology-Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) and emits almost no evaporative emissions.
The advanced energy drive system shares duties between the gasoline-powered 4-cylinder and the emissions-free electric motor - allowing Altima Hybrid to run solely on electric power if appropriate, especially during stop-and-go driving. If extra performance is needed, the gasoline engine starts instantly and smoothly adds power as required.
Altima Hybrid is estimated to have a hybrid system net power rating of 198 horsepower (148 kW). EPA fuel economy is estimated at 35 mpg City and 33 mpg Highway. Combined with Altima's standard 20-gallon fuel tank, the Altima Hybrid has a projected driving range of up to 700 miles between fill-ups.
Cutting-Edge Hybrid Technology
The Altima Hybrid utilizes regenerative braking technology to recharge the hybrid system's batteries, meaning Altima Hybrid doesn't have to "plug in" to sustain a sufficient store of electric energy.
In order to power the electric motor, a generator places resistance on the driveshaft during braking. Altima Hybrid's Regenerative Cooperative Brake System calculates braking force generated by brake pedal operation and controls the regenerative brake force to convert kinetic energy into electric energy, optimizing energy regeneration. The system converts this friction to usable energy that is stored in the system's 244.8V Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery for eventual use by the electric motor.
The Altima Hybrid utilizes proven technology and components from Toyota Motor Corporation that are mated to Nissan's refined 2.5-liter engine.
Nissan's proven QR25 4-cylinder engine has been refined for use in the fourth generation Altima, with a larger intake manifold, increased compression ratio and reduced friction characteristics than the previous generation. The engine also features continuously variable valve timing, modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum-coated lightweight pistons and electronically controlled throttle.
Helping provide smooth acceleration and maximize powertrain efficiency is Altima Hybrid's hybrid system-specific eCVT, which works in conjunction with the Hybrid Vehicle-Electric Control Unit (HV-ECU) to determine which power source or combination of power sources will turn the wheels.
Altima Hybrid's electric motor produces high torque at low rpm, allowing it to utilize its Electric Vehicle (EV) mode to power the car from a standing idle and through initial acceleration without the assistance of the gasoline engine. While this stage of acceleration is a typical gasoline-only powered vehicle's least fuel-efficient stage, Altima Hybrid offers much of its fuel-efficiency benefits here.
Altima Hybrid's all-electric mode, called Electric Vehicle (EV) mode, occurs in this initial acceleration phase.
After the electric motor provides initial acceleration, the gasoline engine quietly starts and assumes the load of powering the vehicle. The gasoline engine works independently through cruising speeds until the vehicle reaches speeds at which fuel efficiency declines.
When loads require, the electric motor restarts again and aids the gasoline engine in powering the Altima Hybrid. This allows the gasoline engine to remain in its ideal rpm range while the axle rpm simultaneously increases due to extra power contributed by the electric motor.
A digital display on the speedometer indicates when the Altima Hybrid is running solely on electric power. The Altima Hybrid's available DVD navigation system also features a real-time display showing how the hybrid system directs the flow of energy.
Altima Hybrid utilizes proven technology and components from Toyota Motor Corporation mated to Nissan's refined 2.5-liter engine.
"Altima Hybrid feels remarkably smooth - most drivers will never be aware of the transitions between the electric and gasoline power sources," said Bosley. "Mostly what they will feel is highly responsive acceleration and the seamless delivery of power under almost all driving conditions."
A Growing Altima Lineup
The Altima Hybrid is one of three distinct choices for Altima buyers in 2008, along with the Altima Sedan and the new Altima Coupe - each delivering a rewarding, engaging driving and ownership experience.
"Altima has always been a leader in class, and the expanding lineup is fulfilling customer specific wants and needs," said Bosley. "The Altima Hybrid makes no compromises when it comes to all the great Altima attributes - especially performance."
Serving as the foundation for the fourth generation 2008 Altima is Nissan's rigid "D" platform. The platform includes a subframe-mounted front suspension, shock absorbers with rebound springs and equal-length half-shafts that are nearly parallel to the ground - virtually eliminating traditional front-wheel drive torque steer.
Altima's exterior features an aggressive stance, a strong wedge character line and signature Altima-style taillights. Inside, Altima utilizes refined workmanship, high-quality materials and a long list of available amenities.
The Altima Hybrid shares exterior and interior designs with the 2008 Altima Sedan - with the exception of unique Hybrid badging and hybrid power/charge display in the driver information display.
The Hybrid model also shares Altima's extensive list of standard safety features, including dual-stage front air bags, front seat side-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection, roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection and front seat Active Head Restraints.
One Well-Equipped Model
The Altima Hybrid is offered in one model, the Altima Hybrid, and with several optional equipment packages. Standard equipment includes the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and hybrid electric components, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), eCVT transmission, 4-wheel power-assisted disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), electric power rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel independent suspension, 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and, new for 2008 standard splash guards and Diversity Antenna. Comfort and convenience features include standard Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and a dual-zone automatic temperature control that includes an Altima Hybrid-specific electrically powered A/C that continues to provide cooling when the gasoline engine is stopped.
The Altima Hybrid also joins other Altima models with an impressive list of available convenience features, including leather-appointed seating, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, RearView ä Monitor, XM® Satellite Radio (required monthly subscription sold separately) and Nissan's Advanced Navigation System with real-time Energy Flow Display.

The 2008 Altima continues to emphasize refined workmanship and the use of soft materials, such as padded armrests, and stylish chrome accents. Interior noise levels are minimized by the rigid "D" platform and increased sound insulation.
Altima's instrument panel features a Fine Vision gauge display for precise readability and the L-shaped flow of the instrument panel to the center console adds to a driver-oriented cockpit feel. The center console includes a triple front cup holder design (CVT-equipped models), among the many convenient cup and bottle areas (up to nine total, including 20-ounce bottle holders in the door panels) and storage compartments, many of which are covered. The volume of the glove compartment is also substantial, measuring an accommodating 0.46 cubic feet.
Thee interiors colors are available - charcoal, blonde and frost. The interior is offered in both high quality soft-touch suede fabric and with leather-appointed seating.
Among the innovative passenger amenities for the class are available Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, Bose ®-developed audio system with nine speakers, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and dual-zone automatic temperature control.
Advanced Platform, Engaging Performance
Altima's exhilarating driving pleasure comes from a tuned combination of strong acceleration, responsive handling and dynamic sound - provided by the rigid "D" platform and advanced engine designs.
The 2008 Altima continues to utilize Nissan's innovative "D" platform, which offers improved body rigidity over the previous design, and an advanced independent front suspension with dynamic geometry and shock absorbers with rebound springs.
A low engine-mounting position features a six-point pendulum-type mounting system and the half-shafts are set at equal angles and nearly parallel to the ground - virtually eliminating torque steer.
Altima's subframe-mounted front suspension makes extensive use of lightweight aluminum parts. An X-type upper cowl structure helps establish front body rigidity for suspension mounting. The rear multi-link independent suspension design separates the rear shock absorbers and springs for minimized friction and the shocks are in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing excellent damping and almost no harshness. Front and rear stabilizer bars are standard.
Altima 3.5 SE offers larger diameter stabilizer bars and unique spring rates and strut damping, as well as 17-inch wheels and tires.
Two powerplants are available in the 2008 Altima, the 13-time Ward's "10 Best Engines" award-winning VQ-series V6 and an inline 4-cylinder.
The 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 is rated at 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and offers strong acceleration and a tuned, resonant sound quality. The V6 features minimized friction, superior cylinder head cooling and twin knock sensors.
Also available is a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder producing 175 horsepower (170 hp CAL) and 180 lb-ft of torque (175 lb-ft CAL). The QR25 engine was refined for 2007 with a larger intake manifold, increased compression ratio (9.6:1 from 9.5:1) and reduced friction characteristics. It features a silent chain drive and a balancer system (with balancer changed to a center-mounted location for excellent NVH) that effectively negates vibrations without taking up much space - combining ideal packaging and smoothness.
Both engines feature continuously variable valve timing, modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons and electronically controlled throttles.
Altima's standard dual exhaust system is designed to reduce exhaust backpressure by 35% on the 4-cylinder and 50% with the V6 (over the previous generations). Both systems utilize large tube diameters and include dual chrome-tipped exhaust finishers.
Smooth, Efficient Xtronic CVT
The 2008 Altima is offered with a choice of two transmissions with both the V6 and 4-cylinder engines. A 6-speed, narrow-gate manual features low friction, short shift stroke, high torque capacity and close gear ratios covering a wide range. The Xtronic CVT is designed to create a true synergy between engine and transmission with smooth, responsive, fluid-feeling performance and efficient operation. The CVT units utilized with both engines have been tailored specifically for use with the Altima.
The V6 CVT features a "Sport" mode controller with a high-speed central processing unit and Adaptive Shift Controller with adaptive logic for fast shifting in both normal and manual modes. The adaptive logic feature delivers the best shift pattern based on the driving environment and driver's perceived intentions. It utilizes 700 programmed algorithms to adjust to differing conditions, such as uphill or downhill driving, as well as adapting to three styles of driving - economy, normal and sporty.
Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS) is available as an option with Altima 3.5-lter V6 equipped models.
Superior Structure, Steering and Braking
The 2008 Altima's sturdy body structure includes extensive use of Ultra High Strength Steel, which is utilized in many locations around the vehicle, including side-impact areas.
Altima's standard twin-orifice vehicle-speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering system provides light steering effort at low speeds and a secure feeling at high speeds, along with a secure, "on center" feel.
Braking for the 2008 Altima is provided by standard 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), which optimizes brake force depending on load condition (passengers and cargo). A variable ratio pivot brake pedal provides a rigid feel at freeway speeds and less sensitive, more controllable operation in city driving.
Altima models equipped with the 4-cylinder engine are equipped with 16-inch wheels (steel wheels with covers on 2.5 and 2.5 S, aluminum-alloy wheels are optional on 2.5 S and standard on 2.5 S with SL Package) and 215/60R16 tires. The V6-equipped Altima 3.5 SL comes standard with 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, while the Altima 3.5 SE features 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and 215/55R17 tires.
Safety, Security and Convenience
Altima comes equipped with a number of standard safety features, including Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), which includes dual-stage front supplemental air bags. Also standard are front seat side-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection.
Other standard equipment includes front seat Active Head Restraints, the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat anchors and tether system and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).
Added convenience is provided by the available RearView Monitor, which utilizes a small camera to help show the view behind the vehicle when in reverse gear.
Other available convenience features include an 8-way power driver's seat, automatic on/off headlights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power sliding glass moonroof, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, XM® Satellite Radio, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver, leather-appointed seating, heated front driver and passenger seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control and rear-passenger air conditioning vents.
Models and Manufacturing
The 2008 Nissan Altima will be available in five well-equipped models: 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 S with SL Package, 3.5 SE and 3.5 SL.
The 2008 Altima is assembled at the Nissan North America Manufacturing Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi plants.
